9.9 leadership means that you can get great business results through a humanistic approach. The leader stresses results needs and the needs of the people equally highly. Here the employees are involved in understanding organizational purpose and determining production needs. When employees are committed to, and involved in the organization's success, their needs and production needs meets. This creates an environment based on trust and respect, which leads to high satisfaction and motivation and, as a result, high production.
The program is based on two behavioral dimensions:

  • Concern for People - This is the degree to which a leader considers the needs of team members, their interests, and areas of personal development when deciding how best to accomplish a task
  • Concern for results - This is the degree to which a leader emphasizes concrete objectives, organizational efficiency and high productivity when deciding to accomplish a task.

  • Only 17 percent felt their organizations foster open communication that is respectful of differing opinions and that result in new and better ideas.

  • Only 10 percent felt their organization holds people accountable for results.
Only 13 percent have a high-trust, highly cooperative working relationships with other groups or departments.

(9.9) Managerial Leadership is Unique

Finally we have the answer, people and organizations should not work against each other, and the roles of leaders and managers should not be centered around monitoring and controlling people all the time.

We need to use a balanced and new approach that achieves maximum results while people are motivated and enjoy what they do. This is not to say the situation will be ideal in terms of people satisfaction or the organization’s desired objectives, of course there will always remain a level of conflict, but with this approach, such a level of tension is minimized, and leaders can get the best of people and results. 

We always struggle what to do with a demoralized staff, the turnover problems, the appraisal dissatisfaction, and how to solve the issue of flexibility and discipline; where do we need to be in the continuum of leadership.

Produce or Perish Leadership - High Production/Low People
Also known as Authoritarian or Compliance Leaders, people in this category believe that employees are simply a means to an end. Employee needs are always secondary to the need for efficient and productive workplaces. This type of leader is very autocratic, has strict work rules, policies, and procedures, and views punishment as the most effective means to motivate employees.
